When the opening credits roll for The Fourth Kind you’re met with the ultra beautiful Milla Jovovich who states for the camera that she is the actress portraying Abigail Emily Tyler, the psychiatrist who is helping a number of clients that have insomnia and amnesia after seeing a mysterious white owl.
When she uses hypnosis with two of the clients, they have nervous breakdown and violent attitudes with their discoveries, but they do not disclose what they have recalled. Jovovich concludes that “most of what follows is disturbing” That much might be true, but the rest of it is in fact nothing more than a hoax in order to suck the viewer in.
The film is shot documentary style with actual footage and reconstruction alongside each other, we are pointed out most of the way through when the so called evidence is being played either by tape or video but in actual fact it’s us the audience who are being played.
If anyone who watched this film found themselves getting sucked into the story and if for a second believed that any of what they were seeing was in fact true, would probably think the X-Files was 100% accurate.
While there might be a few scares, and I mean only a few, the film pads out a plot that sees Abigail strive for the truth into the murder of her husband, which might have seemingly come at his own hands.
Director Olatunde Osunsanmi who actually appears in the film as the interviewer of the supposed real Abigail Emily Tyler leaves us under no illusions that the so called actual footage while disturbing, is nothing more than a slight of hand charade.
It might reel a few of the more gullible in but for the more perceptive audience this is nothing more than another Blair Witch attempt at the undiscovered footage.
