Michael Fassbender joins Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Star of Inglorious Bastereds Michael Fassbender has signed up for Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi Prometheus.

The film which at the time was being talked about as an Alien prequel will see Fassbender play an android which might be a possible link to the ‘DNA’ that Scott has dropped hints over.

Joining Fassbender in the film will be Girl With The Dragon Tattoo who will be the film’s lead while Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are reportedly both interested in playing the part of Vickers, who will be the second lead.

The release date for this film has changed from its original slot of March 2012, and a summer date seems likely. Studio Fox obviously see this as a summer blockbuster in a similar fan guise as the one created by Nolan’s Inception.

New details on Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel

It must be one of the most eagerly anticipated two parters for some time, (if you don’t count all the hype surrounding The Hobbit) and even though we’ll still have to wait a few more years details are emerging through Vulture about Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels.

Some interesting news straight off is the name, no more calling it “the Alien prequel”, it will be called Paradise…what? We were left scratching our heads on that as well, but is it going to help mark this out as a totally new direction for the franchise?

Now to the most important part, the plot. This will centre on a group of space travellers who encounter a xenomorph, before it made its way onto the Nostromo. There is also talk of an earlier version of Bishop the android so we wonder if we’ll see Lance Henriksen back?

Vulture’s source is also stating that the release dates of the 3D prequels will not be moving from 2013 to 2014, as has recently been mooted.

The final bit of news is the claim that Scott is hoping to cast Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh alongside Noomi Rapace (who’s considered to have one hand on the lead role).

It could be master stroke in the casting department (what director wouldn’t want Fassbender in their movie?) but it’s an extremely tantalising possibility.

There are times we have been worried by these prequels but in the hands of the master Sir Ridley of Scott we hope that he’ll not drop the ball on his now aging baby.

Robin Hood – 2010

The last time Robin Hood donned the tights was back in 1991 with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Kevin Costner, the master of the epics delivered a very successful adaptation of the famous outlaw.

Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe teamed up once again to bring yet another famous tale to the big screen and they do it very well.

The year is 1199 and as Richard The Lionheart (Danny Huston) returns from the Third Crusade, both he and his right-hand man, Robert Loxley (Douglas Hodge), are slain in France. It’s left to one of their archers, Robin Longstride (Crowe), to return Richard’s crown to London and Loxley’s sword to Nottingham.

There, he poses as Loxley, and finds himself embroiled in devious treachery and one sided politics — not only that he has to tackle a French plot abetted by the traitorous Sir Godfrey played brilliantly by Mark Strong, certainly a contender to vie Alan Rickman’s Sheriff.

What makes this tale so unique is that his band merry men are together from the start. Little John, Will Scarlett and Allan A’Dayle share the perils from the opening battle and are never once referred to as ‘merry’ but add a touch of humour which is needed on the odd occasion. The other addition, bee keeping, mead making Friar Tuck (Mark Addy) only appears later down the line.

Maid Marion or as she’s called here Marion Loxley is the daughter of Sir Walter Loxley (Max von Sydow) portrayed by Cate Blanchett (at the very most she was way down the pecking order for the part) she gives an assured performance as a woman able to handle her own but still keeping her true sense of old fashioned values.

If you’re a little lost don’t worry, I doubt you’d be the first. But take time to watch the film and everything fits together well. Those expecting to see a vile Sheriff of Nottingham (Matthew Macfadyen) will be disappointed, he’s more a bit part and only really a puppet whose strings are pulled by Prince John.

The story flows well and there are some terrific performances to savour. It’s gritty relism and epic well choreographed battle scenes make it a throughly enjoyable watch, and there isn’t a Brian Adams ballard in sight!

Alien prequel gets studio approval

Lost screenwriter Damon Lindelof has just delivered his script for the Alien prequel to the chaps at 20th Century Fox, and word is that they really love it.

Not because it kicks all kinds of xenomorph booty, but because it’s probably going to cost less to make than Ridley Scott’s original proposed budget of $150m.

Over the last week or so we have debated as to who is going to fill the female role and now it looks like it could be the gorgeous Natalie Portman.

Portman has officially met with Scott and his team, and is the current favourite for the lead role of a “female Colonial marine General”.

More positive news keeps on coming in the report that Lindelof’s script should be a desolate, creepy film that while not involving too many giant action set pieces, imitates the feeling of the original Alien with off-screen violence and few F-bombs.

Rapace is another Alien Prequels contender

Ridley Scott looks like he’s making sure his casting net to find the lead for his Alien prequels covers a wide area. Scott seems to be meeting every actress in town including Swedish sensation Noomi Rapace.

The actress, who made a name for herself in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, has recently landed the lead female role in Sherlock Holmes 2, and is being courted for Hansel And Gretel alongside Jeremy Renner.

Now, Deadline report that Rapace has met with Scott to discuss his two 3D Alien prequels, and “left a strong impression” on the Brit director.

Of course, Scott has also met with Brit girl of the moment Carey Mulligan, currently appearing in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and Gemma Arterton has mentioned she will be having a chat with the director as well.

In lieu of Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, who won’t be appearing in the prequels, Scott clearly needs to find himself a tough, ET-bashing heroine for our times – and who better than the girl with the dragon tattoo?
