Jeremy Renner talks the impossible

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star Jeremy Renner has talked about the possibility of one day taking of the riegns from Tom Cruise as the go to guy for the action franchise.

Currently shooting the franchise’s fourth outing – which has dropped its numerals in favour of the reboot-nodding title  Ghost Protocol – Renner has discussed the future of the series.

“It’s a franchise to potentially take over,” he tells MTV. “I can’t predict the future and what they want, but that’s certainly the idea.”

Renner goes on to reveal that Cruise has been heavily involved in Protocol’s action scenes, while Renner himself has been training in hand-to-hand combat.

“I haven’t gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane… Tom has been doing loads. He’s crazy, that guy. It’s unbelievable. He’s fearless. He’s great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better.

“I’m training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I’m doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly.”

Renner would seem to be a good choice after having flexed his action muscles in films like S.W.A.T and The Hurt Locker.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens December 2011.

Jeremy Renner to Escape from New York

Hollywood heart throb and star of the Hurt Locker Jeremy Renner is the latest name to be attached to the Escape From New York remake.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Renner is in ‘close talks’ about taking the lead in the remake, but insist that it’s in extremely early stages right now, and isn’t close to official just yet.

Breck Eisner, the man behind above-average remake The Crazies, is in line to direct the project, which has so far seen Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner and Jonathan Mostow come and go.

There’s no doubt that Renner as Snake Plissken would be an exciting prospect, but would we really want to see another John Carpenter classic remade especially after Rob Zombie’s piss poor attempt with Halloween.

Renner’s talent is unquestioned and seems to be the go to guy for action leads these days. But would he be able to pull it off and step into the shoes made famous by Kurt Russell.

Renner might just be too busy to take this on as he’s currently shooting Mission: Impossible 4, before heading off to play Hawkeye in Marvel’s The Avengers.

Rapace is another Alien Prequels contender

Ridley Scott looks like he’s making sure his casting net to find the lead for his Alien prequels covers a wide area. Scott seems to be meeting every actress in town including Swedish sensation Noomi Rapace.

The actress, who made a name for herself in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, has recently landed the lead female role in Sherlock Holmes 2, and is being courted for Hansel And Gretel alongside Jeremy Renner.

Now, Deadline report that Rapace has met with Scott to discuss his two 3D Alien prequels, and “left a strong impression” on the Brit director.

Of course, Scott has also met with Brit girl of the moment Carey Mulligan, currently appearing in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and Gemma Arterton has mentioned she will be having a chat with the director as well.

In lieu of Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, who won’t be appearing in the prequels, Scott clearly needs to find himself a tough, ET-bashing heroine for our times – and who better than the girl with the dragon tattoo?

Dragon Tattoo star is new Impossible villain

Michael Nyqvist, who played journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, will play one of the lead villains in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 4.

The film, being directed by Brad Bird, has slowly been pulling together its cast, with new faces Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Vladimir Mashkov joining Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg in the action movie.

J.J. Abrams, who is producing with Cruise and Paula Wagner, worked on the story with scribes Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum, who have written the screenplay.

The production is scouting locations in Vancouver, Prague and Dubai for a December 2011 release.

Garner joins ‘Chemistry’

Jennifer Garner is in talks to star opposite Jeremy Renner in “Better Living Through Chemistry,” a dramatic thriller from Occupant Films.

“Chemistry” centers on a small-town pharmacist (Renner) who is stuck in a loveless marriage and rediscovers himself through an affair with a trophy wife (Garner) who introduces him to the pleasures of prescription drugs. Things spin out of control when the affair escalates and the lovers begin plotting to kill the woman’s husband.

Geoff Moore and David Posamentier, better known as scribes, are making their directorial debut with the picture.

Occupant is behind “Peep World,” the black comedy with Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson and Sarah Silverman that screens Wednesday night at the Toronto International Film Festival.
