Gamer – 2009

Gamer is an out there type of film, you wonder if you should keep watching, but  you do. After the success of Crank and the even more sureal Crank 2, writer directors Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine turned their attention to another action packed off the planet Sci-Fi film.

Gamer is set way in the future where online gaming has taken on a new twist as players are now able to control actual human beings within a real world environment. It’s a twisted take on mind control and dropped into the centre of it is John Tilman (Gerard Butler).

Tilman, a convict on death row is a part of Slayers, an online game that sees death row convicts fight to the death for a chance at freedom, if they can get through 30 fights, all the while controlled by their human counterpart.

Gamer is packed full of action, there is no denying that, it’s like a cross between the Running Man and Death Race on Speed. The high octane scenes are intense as they are weird as if someone on a bad trip has picked up a camera and gone to town. The vast mix of colorful characters are oddly effective to the story and fit in well. After turning his hand to the rom-com genre it’s good to see Butler back in a blood thirsty role not seen since he donned leather for 300.

Michael C Hall best known for Dexter is sinisterly good as the gaming billionaire, and he surely moves himself into the psychopathic character elite. It’s certainly not going to be to everyone’s taste, but fans of Crank will be in familiar surroundings once this goes into the DVD player!

Law Abiding Citizen – 2009

leaves you guessing!

leaves you guessing!

How far would you go to see justice served? Would you stop at nothing to get it? For Clyde Sheldon that dilemma has become a reality. Having seen his wife and daughter murdered and the men responsible practically getting off scot free Sheldon takes matters into his own hands. It’s up to district attorney Nick Rice who only cares about his conviction record, to stop him!

The film keeps you on tender hooks and guessing all the way through as to how Sheldon is picking off everyone connected with his wife and daughters murder and subsequent trial. It’s a game of cat and mouse. The storyline is strong and Butler is cold and calculating as man seemingly pushed over the edge, Jamie Foxx also shows he has a few acting talents with a solid performance.

All in all it’s a well scripted and well directed film which should have audiences gripped through. 4 stars!
