Bale to leave Batman role after Dark Knight Rises

If the Dark Knight makes one more outing after the next instalment it is more than likely it will be without Christian Bale.

Bale has announced that The Dark Knight Rises will mark his last time in famous batsuit…although that is as far as he knows.

Bale said, ‘I believe, unless Chris (Nolan) says different, this will be the last time I’m playing Batman.’

Director Christopher Nolan is currently in pre-production for the threequel of the popular caped crusader, which is due to begin filming next year.

Dismissing any rumours or speculation of continuing the series, Bale said he wouldn’t believe anything unless it comes from Nolan himself.

“Until Chris tells me, I don’t believe it,” Bale says. “It’s gotta be from his mouth, or else I don’t really know.’

The actor, who is currently promoting new film The Fighter, for which he is already attracting Oscar buzz, also claimed to have very little info on the plot of TDKR.

‘Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it. I probably know a little bit more than some other people out there, but I think most people would be surprised at how little I do know.’

“It just hasn’t been necessary yet. I know he’ll give me plenty of time to prepare for whatever I need to, and I’ll discover it.’

‘He’s a pretty damn good filmmaker. I trust that he’s going to come up with something wonderful.’

Don’t worry we’re pretty sure it is going to be something more than wonderful!

The Fighter is out in UK cinemas February 4 2011 and The Dark Knight Rises is set for July 20 2012.

Six of the best #3 Christian Bale

This week we look at the rise of Christian Bale, the actor who has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters has yet another outstanding performance on the cards alongside Mark Wahlberg in the The Fighter due out early next year.

Here we pick out six of his past films that we reckon defined the actor as one of the best and most sort after in film today.

6. Empire of the Sun – 1987

Why we loved it: The film that really kick started Bale’s acting career and one that was extremely powerful and moving at the same time.

Bale was just 13-years old but he displayed all the characteristics of an exciting young actor in the making and a film well worth checking out if you’ve not seen it.

5. Rescue Dawn – 2006

Why we loved it: This was another one of Bale’s films where he displayed his dedication and unique ability to put himself right into a role.

As with The Machinist Bale dropped weight and lived it tough in the jungle for his part as Dieter Dengler, a pilot shot down during the Vietnam war and whose fight to survive was nothing short of astounding.

4. The Machinist – 2004

Why we loved it: Bale caused quite a stir with this film for the main reason that he shed the better part of 63 pounds to play an industrial worker who hasn’t slept in a year and begins to doubt his own sanity.

It was another solid performance from Bale who was really becoming noticed in Hollywood for his total and devoted commitment to his roles.

3. Terminator Salvation – 2009

Why we loved it: There is only one reason why we loved Bale in this, and it wasn’t a scene that ever made it onto screen. Bale’s outburst and rant at a fellow production worker on set got cult status around the world.

However put yourself into his shoes, when you’re doing a dramatic scene do you really want someone making noises off camera.

2. American Psycho - 2000

Why we loved it: A standout performance from Bale as a wealthy New York investment banking executive hiding his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends.

It was a sinister and terrifying performance from Bale with some truly horrific laugh out-loud moments.

1. Batman Begins – 2005

Why we loved it: Christopher Nolan’s choice to cast Bale as the infamous Dark Knight was sheer genius. Bale took the part with both hands and simply nailed it, not just in this one but the sequel also (even though he was upstaged somewhat by Heath Ledger).

His gruff sounding voice and iconic Batman linked with the smooth and traumatised Bruce Wayne was a recipe for success.

Mark Wahlberg on The Fighter

Some actors just go above and beyond the call of duty in the quest of making a part their own.

Mark Wahlberg is one such actor. The Hollywood star who plays blue-collar boxer “Irish” Micky Ward in the upcoming film The Fighter, recently told CBS’ 60 Minutes that making the movie was far from easy.

Wahlberg put himself through a rigerous and grueling training schedule which included building a boxing ring in his own home and training between eight and ten hours a day. And all this without even knowing if the film was ever going to be made.

“There were certainly times where I would wake up at 4:30 in the morning, you know, my trainer would ring the bell, and, ‘Oh God,’ ” said Wahlberg, who insisted on doing his own stunts. “I’m like, ‘I better get this movie made.’ You know, ‘Kill somebody if I don’t get this movie made.’”

However Wahlberg persisted because he could see glimpses of his life story in Ward’s; both are one of nine kids and grew up in working-class Massachusetts. He also was a huge fan of Ward’s, calling him a “local sports hero.”

Doing all his own stunts in the movie resulted in him very nearly getting his nose broken on more that one occasion, but this was all part of the day job and shows Wahlberg’s true dedication to the film.

Wahlberg said that when the fights were shot, the main goal was for them to be as real as possible. And they are certainly that, just watching the trailer you can see how life like it all is and how much of himself Wahlberg put into the film.

He grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston, dropped out of school when he was 13 and used to sneak out of his bedroom window at night to drink and steal things including cars.

At age 17, he was sentenced to prison after attacking a man with a stick over two cases of beer; the man lost an eye.

“At first, I’m thinking, well, I’m one of the guys now. I made it. And then I just realized, well, this is what it means to be one of the guys. And I just wanted more out of my life,” said Wahlberg, who served 45 days behind bars and says a lot of his childhood friends are “either dead or in jail.”

After leaving prison Wahlberg turned his life around, becoming a rapper and modeling for Calvin Klein in his underwear.

Director Penny Marshall was credited with pushing Wahlberg into acting when she called him about her film Renaissance Man in which he had the part of Pvt. Tommy Lee Haywood.

“When I sat down with her, I was like, ‘Nah, I don’t wanna act.’ She goes, ‘What do you mean? You’re acting all the time, you’re acting right now. You know, you’re just acting like you’re cool, you act like a tough guy. You know, take the pages. Go outside, look ‘em over, and then come back in, and, and audition for one of the parts,’” Wahlberg said.

Wahlberg took the part and has never looked back, starring in some blockbuster movies such as Shooter, The Italian Job and Boogie Nights.

He was also nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for The Departed in which he really showed off his acting talents.

Wahlberg says his biggest regret is not finishing high school.

“Imagine what I could have done with a real education; I’d be running whatever studio I work for now,” Wahlberg said.

He still seems to be grateful for the position that he finds himself in and when asked how he defines himself, the actor replies: “A lucky son of a bitch.”

The Fighter First Look

I’m going to stick my neck out now and make a prediction, The Fighter is going to be one of the films of the 2010!

Based on a true story the film follows the early years of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his brother (Bale) who helped train him before going pro in the mid 1980s.

Looking at the trailer it is high time that Christian Bale finally gets a look in for the Oscars, no other actor I know puts so much dedication and work into their roles.

Bale shed more weight for this one to play an addict and he’s no stranger to shedding the pounds.

Those who watched The Machinist and Rescue Dawn will know just how far Bale is willing to push himself and I for one hope that it pays off.

Mark Wahlberg too has beefed up for his role to play former Welterweight Micky Ward, the star of The Departed, the film he was Oscar nominated for looks nothing short of ripped in this one!

You can’t beat a good boxing moive, one where the future champ is down on his kness but beats all the odds to come back.

Director David O. Russell who was with Wahlberg for the brilliant Three Kings looks to add another masterpiece to his belt, and if neither actor gets a nomination for this or at the most a best pixture nomination then I’ll lose all my faith in the Oscars altogether.

The Fighter is out in the UK February 2011, so check back here for more news surrounding the film.

Batman 3 Gets Release Date

Batman 3 gets a release date of July 20th 2012, so I’m afraid Bat fans we’re going to have to wait a bit longer to see the caped crusader back in action.

There is pretty much nothing to go on in terms of the plot, although rumours suggest we might get to see the Riddler introduced with Joseph Gordon-Levitt being touted to slip on the green suit.

Are we going to see the Joker again? Who knows, although we do know that it won’t be spectacularly played by Heath Ledger.

Keep checking back for more news on the upcoming Batman 3!
