Surrogates – 2009

Surrogates is another in a long line of confused sci-fi films, it’s I-Robot meets Total Recall meets Minority Report, and the story is one of the most absurd I’ve come across in a while.

Humans live their life through surrogates, robot likenesses of themselves (well in some cases) that are controlled through the mind. There is no death, no disease and no crime A line that I’m sure has been used more than once in Hollywood.

Bruce Willis is Sam Greer and FBI agent who must leave the confines of his home and the chair in which he controls his surrogate in to investigate the murder of other surrogates. Confused?

Bruce Willis is the ultimate action hero, a man whose probably saved the planet more times than you could count on all fingers and toes. But judging by this performance he looks a little bored, normally there is a trademark wise crack or even a slight smile, not here.

Director Jonathan Mostow returns to film for the first time since 2003s Terminator Rise of the Machines, and to be honest it doesn’t get any better here. While there is enough action sequences to please the eye and some average special effects that is about all it delivers on. The script is patchy and the action is normally extinguished before the fuse has even been lit.

The story in itself is weak, the creator and father of the surrogate program suddenly wants to turn on it and destroy it, Greer and Peters (Radha Mitchell) investigate without a lot of conviction. It’s a watch to pass the time, but you may like Willis, feel that it offers no real emotion of any kind.
