Sex in the City 2 – 2010

It feels like yesterday that we saw most of the male population in the civilised world running away from cinemas everywhere and covering their eyes at the sight of anything pink or when reading the word “Manolo Bhlanik” after the release of the first cinematic adaptation of squee-inducing series Sex and the City, but here we are again with Sex in the City 2 .
Describing both movies – and the series – as “chick flicks” would be certainly reductive, as they don’t just tell the story of a woman in New York but are also seen as an interpretation of female life in modern society; Sex and the City has spurred debates, trends, ideas since its start many years ago.
However, saying that it doesn’t have flaws or clichés would be as wrong as thinking that all women love Sarah Jessica Parker (men, have faith, some of us actually find her annoying!). This point is particularly clear in this 2010 installment.
The first film ended with Carrie finally getting married to her beloved Big, while the others also found a happy ending for themselves: Miranda got back together with her cheating, rather insipid husband. Charlotte had her first biological baby, while Samantha just kept sleeping around like there’s no tomorrow.
Just as we were taking a relieved breath, Carrie comes back and she’s got a brand new paranoia: yes, she wanted to be married, but no, she doesn’t want married life. Suddenly, she realises that the tv in the bedroom is her Number One Enemy. Like a super modern version of ‘The princess and the pea’ fairytale, princess Carrie’s got everything, but she goes on a strop when her husband doesn’t want to go out for dinner, or dares put his feet on the new mega expensive couch.
Her friends, in the meantime, are also faced with dilemmas. Charlotte wanted to be a mum, but the stay-at-home life stresses and depresses her, while Miranda has to face a sexist boss at work and an even more boring than before- husband at home. Samantha seems to be the only one who actually has fun, although her crazy man-eater attitude is now frankly becoming repetitive.
The main part of the film is represented by the trip that the four best-friends-for-life take to the Middle East, an all-expenses-paid super luxury holiday, during which…nothing really happens. Needless to say, our heroines come back and realise that what they have is, really, not that bad.
The overall impression this film gives is that the plot is non-existent. You’ll probably feel as if you’re in front of a moving, talking glossy magazine, with a catwalk of clothes and shoes. A showcase of the sheer luxuries the Middle East can offer to whoever can pay, all of this completed by a bunch of cheesy quotes and clichés about husbands cheating with nannies and nannies not sleeping with husbands only because they’re lesbians.
