Jan de Bont to Helm Live-Action Mulan
Jan de Bont may be more famous for having directed such action blockbusters like Speed and Twister, but he’s not directed a film since 2003’sLara Croft: The Cradle Of Life.
Now though he’s looking to get back into the chair with another kick-ass female fighter, by bringing a live-action version of Mulan to the big screen.
The Oscar-nominated Chinese folk tale which was a Disney animated movie in 1998, followed a Chinese maiden who pretends to be a man so that she can fight the invading Huns.
Zhang Ziyi has been cast in the English-language film – and considering her past credits include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, we’re sure she’s perfect to fill the role that will no doubt include massive scale and energy that such a production will involve.
Other characters in this new version will include a sword-fighting 15-year-old brother for Mulan, as well as a female mystic who aids the main villain.
De Bont has certainly got an eye for action, but his main short coming always seems to be with the films plot. Hopefully he’ll be able to deliver the epic he’s obviously hoping to.
