Inception might just be this years best film, correction, Inception is this years best film! Christopher Nolan has again waved his directorial wand and created a magnificant masterpiece that tantelises the mind as well as the eyes.
In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job yet, Inception.
Concentration levels may be a nessesity here as the viewer is picked up and dragged through a number of dream scapes, but while you might sit and think what the hell is going on Nolan’s narrative is cleverly crafted and we don’t once lose our page.
Others may compare certain scenes to that of the Matrix, being plugged in vs being hooked up and sent to dream land or even the swirling aura of the weightlessness hotel fight. However its easy to drift away from those comparisons as we are directed on a journey of possible self discovery into our own potential subconsciousness.
DiCaprio puts in another winning performace, seemingly able to handle whatever is thrown at him with both confidence and experience. His cast around him dispite being a slightly mismatched band of brothers are equally good, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur and Ellen Page as Ariadne offer sleak and sexy alternatives for when DiCaprio is off screen.
The action sequences are mind blowing, from car chases to the winter mountain assult each constructed to keep us gripped in our seat. We can’t of course forget to mention the dream worlds that are created, the exploding building is facinating as is the bending street.
The film offers so much more than just action and special effects, many will leave the theatre wondering what kinds of things they dream about. How love and death can battle as one and how we find it hard to let go of past events. It also poses the question about what kinds of things lurk deep beneath are own subconciouness.
In all this Nolan stands as a mastercrafstman, he takes a big budget and spends it well only for it to generate a small fortune at the other end. You only have to look at his list of past films to see that not many of them have been given the harsh tongue by any film critic.
Whatever his next project is, one hopes he is now concentrating hard with Batman 3, it will be a spectacle that we can only dream about.
