G.I Joe Rise of the Cobra – 2009

I’m going to look at G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra from two perspectives, the first is the entertainment value. There is no question that this film, just shy of a two hour run time, delivers on entertainment. It’s almost like Transformers minus the robots, whether that is a good thing or not I don’t know.

The second is the plot, well there isn’t one really, not credible anyway which is a shame as this could have been a real winner had it delivered in that area.

Stephen Sommers helmed this one and he’s certainly got the experience of main stream action films behind him having already directed the first two Mummy adventures (look out for a nice cameo by Brendan Fraser in this one) There are some explosive scenes, great fight sequences and mind blowing CGI, but where G.I Joe let’s itself down is with the ridiculous plot and shocking acting.

The pointless need for flashbacks including the opening prologue which was set in 17th century France and leads us into the background of our villain of the piece James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston), and the battle between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow.

These could have probably been tied up with a few sentences in the middle and cut half an hour out of the piece. It’s all bangs and whistles and guns blazing, but when you strip it down to its bare essentials its barely second rate.
