Drag Me To Hell – 2009

Drag Me To Hell is not your average horror film, yes there are scares a plenty but it’s so much more than that. Director Sam Raimi has brought his own unique style not seen since The Evil Dead trilogy to this one with great effect.

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) has a great job as a loan officer at the local bank where she is one step away from promotion. She has a charming and caring boyfriend (Justin Long) so life looks pretty good.

That is until she refuses a loan application and is cursed by Sylvia Ganush, an old gypsy woman with a serious grudge. With only three days left before she is dragged to hell she enlists the help of a spiritualist in order to help save her from her fate.

Raimi clearly has fun throughout this film, and it’s so apparent that he has missed horror. Having helmed all three Spiderman films it was obviously time to blow off a little steam and it shows in this film.

The scares come thick and fast and are built up and then let down with humorous results. The scene in the underground car park underpins what a vivid imagination Raimi has and how brilliantly detailed and calculated he is in his direction.

The best thing about Drag Me To Hell is the sheer outrageous of it and how far it goes to produce shock value. Just when you think you have seen it all something else crops up and slaps you across the face. The dialogue is slightly dire and the film does not really get going until at least twenty minutes in, but when it does you just sit back and enjoy the show.
