Jaws was an exceptional film, a real class act, one that is still regarded as one of the true film triumphs, no surprise it was helmed by Steven Spielberg. Despite the fact that it spawned a number of pointless sequels all done to make money the first film will always go down as the best.
It had a number of brilliant scares in it, but while they might seem dated now in a world filled with motion capture and CGI I am looking at this scare from a 1975 perspective, the year of its release.
The scene has been set, Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) have all embarked on a mission to reel in the sinister beast. It was a tale of three men all from different backgrounds and with three very different connections to the shark, this worked brilliantly for the final act of the film.
This scene also coined a legendary movie quote, still used and parodied today! “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”
